Violet Protest at Silk Road Textiles

Violet Protest

The Violet Protest, founded by fiber artist Ann Morton, is a public effort  to send 50 handmade textile squares to each and every member of Congress in support of these core American Values:

• Civility and Respect   • Citizenship   • Compromise   • Country over party and corporate influence   • Courage     • Candor    • Compassion   • Creativity.

“Whether we knit, crochet, quilt, or embroider all 26,750 of these squares  —  through this social action, from every corner of America; we as makers of all political persuasions, believe we can employ our will, spirit, and talents to contribute to healing the divisions that threaten our country.” This collection of textiles squares will first be displayed at the Phoenix Art Museum, Spring of 2021, before they are sent as packages of 50 each to the 535 members of the new 117th US Congress later in 2021.

The Violet Protest is looking for makers from all 50 United States and Puerto Rico to make square textile units (8” x 8” in size) using any of the following techniques: knit, crochet, weave, sewn/pieced, quilted, embroidered, applique, felting, screen printed fabric – or combinations of techniques. Make one square or many.

All squares should be made using equal parts of red and blue. Makers are free to combine prints and colors, textures, stitching and yarns as long as they make squares that have an equal combination of red and blue so that in the final display will give the overall presentation of violet.  Focused on the values we hold dear as Americans, rather than any political beliefs, the color violet symbolizes the literal combination of red and blue, long held as symbols of our nation’s differing ideologies.

Our common goal is to send a physical message of friendly protest through this colossal visual expression to demonstrate that if we as citizens are willing to come together, so then must our elected officials. Click here to register with the Violet Protest.

Violet Protest “Maker Days” at Silk Road Textiles
Please join like-minded makers and create your contribution with friends on Silk Road Textiles’ Violet Protest “Maker Days.” Of course, you can work on your own, too, but we often enjoy creating together! We will have suggested yarns and fabrics for purchase to use, or you can select your own choices. Participants who register commit to making a certain number of squares (1, 5, 10, etc.) and then send their finished work back to the artist, Ann Morton, by November 15, 2020.  You can register here if you like.   Don’t want to sign up?  We will happily send your finished squares to Ann in Phoenix along with our Silk Road Textiles contributions. Just have them to us by November 1, 2020.

“Maker Day”  Free studio time for those who want to create with others!
Sat. 8/15 1-4PM
Purchase yarn or fabric for your 8×8″ squares at Silk Road Textiles to join the fun. Once completed, show us your 5 finished Violet Protest pieces by November 1, 2020.  You will save 25% on a single yarn, fabric or notion/needle purchase that day.
