June Cashmere At Silk Road Textiles Trunk Show November 17- November 27 Meet June Cashmere Ambassador to the US, Kelly Bettinger, 6:30pm on November 17 at our weekly Stitch Night. June Cashmere’s 100% cashmere yarns begin their journey when the cashmere is hand collected by Kyrgyz shepherds living on small family farms along the ancient Silk Road amidst the soaring mountains of Central Asia. The cashmere is then purchased directly from the shepherds by June Cashmere. The personal touch ensure that top quality fiber is being gathered and ensures that the shepherds receive fair compensation for their elite fiber. June is the Kyrgyz word for animal fiber. From felted woolen rugs to the clothes on their backs, june has made itself an indelible part of Kyrgyz culture. Once gathered, the cashmere fiber is shipped to Europe where artisans clean and spin the fiber into fine knitting yarn. The yarn makes its final stop at Saco River Dyehouse in Maine where it is organically dyed using environmentally-friendly, sustainable methods. June Cashmere yarn takes a truly unique trip around the world to obtain its unique warmth, beauty, and luxurious feel. Click here for a short introductory video. Silk Road Textiles and June Cashmere share a similar mission. We are so excited to offer each of you this opportunity. The trunk show features DK & Lace Weight yarn, sample projects and patterns. Purchase this exquisite yarn for a very special gift or for your own personal “after the holidays” project. Don’t miss the chance to grab some of this exclusive yarn! Silk Road Textiles is proud to be part of the Million Pillowcase Challenge. Seven years ago, American Patchwork and Quilting issued a challenge to quilters and sewers to make pillowcases to raise the spirits of those in need. Not unexpectedly, sewers and quilters have risen to the challenge. To date, the official counter indicates that 689,998 pillowcases have been made and donated! Individuals and groups donate the pillowcases they make locally to hospitals, shelters, social service agencies, and anyplace else where someone can use a smile. Join us on Monday, September 19, anytime from 12-9PM, to sew pillowcases for the Million Pillowcase Challenge Sew-a-thon. All pillowcases will be donated locally to hospitals, shelters, or other places where people are in need of a smile. All who register before the day of the event will be entered in a prize drawing, so stop by or call the shop to register now! Registration fee of $6 includes one pillowcase kit. Additional kits will be available for purchase during the sew-a-thon. We will have a couple of simple patterns available for you to use and door prizes throughout the day. Fair Trade Update: Knitter’s Pride Needles and Hooks Knitters Pride Needles were featured in “The Needles We Knit With,” by Karin Strom in Interweave Knits Spring 2014. Karin describes the Knitter’s Pride factory as a modern, new facility, built in 2011 dedicated purely to making needles and hooks. During her tour she was “fascinated to see how much handwork is required to make these tools, even though state-of-the-art machines are used throughout the process. Women sand crochet hooks by hand, individually test each joint of interchangeables and glue the metal tips onto carbon needle ends, one by one.“ Knitter’s Pride has established, and continues to fund, a rural school that prioritizes the education of girls and young women. The KP executives are passionate about the advancement of girls and women; the company’s hiring policy states that “any woman who wants a job with the company is hired, no exceptions.” We love knowing that our crafting dollars go back to these women in an important way. Knitter’s Pride products are available in a full range of types: Double Points, Fixed Circulars, Single Points, Crochet, Cuboid and an interchangeable line that is innovative in design and satisfying in performance. Knitter’s Pride needles and hooks come in a variety of materials: densified laminated birch wood, nickel plated brass, natural birch and aluminum, and all lengths and sizes – including the not-easy-to-find jumbo tools—all the way up to 25 mm knitting needles (US 50)! Silk Road Textiles is proud to carry several styles of these wonderful to use, fairly traded, affordably priced needles and hooks. If we don’t have the one you need, we will be happy to order it for you. Happy International Women’s Day! Saturday, March 8, 2014 “Equality for women is progress for all.” Each year, International Women’s Day celebrates woman and their achievements around the world. We are so excited to announce our very first yarn tasting party! This exciting event, sponsored by Knitting Fever, will give you the opportunity to test drive dozens of yarns, some of which we carry, some of which we may get in the future. We’ll have stations set up around the store where you can knit or crochet a bit with a wide variety of fibers and weights. You’ll get a special sheet to fill in so you remember exactly what you thought of each yarn, and at the end of the night we’ll be giving every skein from the tasting away! That’s right, you leave with a nearly new ball of yarn. There will also be light refreshments available. Some of the brands we’ll be showcasing include: Noro Mirasol Juniper Moon Elsebeth Lavold and more! This event replaces Thursday open stitching for 23 January 2014. The cost is just $10 – a great deal considering these yarns retail for more than that – and spots are going quickly. Call or stop in today to secure your place at the yarn tasting party!
